EPCOT Turns 44

Forty-four years ago tonight, nearly 5,000 formally dressed guests gathered around a glowing Spaceship Earth to dedicate Future World. The dream of EPCOT Center was officially underway.

October 22, 1982 was not the day the gates first opened — that happened on the 1st — but it was the night Future World received its formal dedication. Nearly 5,000 invited guests arrived in black tie and evening gowns. Cast members in tuxedos carried trays of champagne. Seven big bands played. Spaceship Earth stood lit against the Florida sky as the centerpiece of the evening.

Epcot celebrates 44th birthday on October 22, 2026.

The Goodyear blimp even made an appearance, flashing a salute to Walt Disney World and EPCOT Center. It was elegant, hopeful, and unmistakably of its moment — a celebration of the future as Disney imagined it in 1982.

The formal grand opening stretched across three days. Future World on the 22nd, World Showcase on the 23rd, and the full dedication of EPCOT Center on the 24th, when Card Walker read the plaque that still greets visitors today: a place of joy, hope, and friendship.

Tonight, forty-four years later, Spaceship Earth still rises over the same entrance. The park has changed (World Celebration and World Discovery have replaced the old Future World name), but the anniversary of that black-tie evening remains a favorite for fans who remember the original vision — or who simply love the history of how it all began.

If you’re at EPCOT tonight, take a moment near Spaceship Earth. The lights still look beautiful after dark, and the story of that October night in 1982 still feels close.
